Sam B. McNaghten passed away peacefully October 9th, 2016 at his home in Elk, WA at the age of 93. Sam was born in March, 1923 in Branson Colorado to Alcutt and Anna McNaghten he was the third of five children. After graduating from high school Sam joined the US Navy in WW II from 1942 to 1946. He served in all three theaters of the war circumnavigating the globe and surviving 18 hours in the Indian Ocean after his ship was sunk by enemy action in February of 1944. After discharge he went to work as a telegrapher with the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad and while working in Heartwell, NE met Dee Porterfield. They were married 6 months later and lived in blessed matrimony for 70 years. While with the railroad Sam worked in many capacities and in many cities over his 35 year career with the railroad. Increased responsibilities and promotions required over 28 separate moves for he and Dee during their first 28 years of marriage. Sam settled in the Seattle area for the final years of his career retiring from the Burlington Northern RR as Director of Transportation in 1981. Sam was active in his church and community. He was heavily involved in youth baseball in Kirkland, WA and was an original Seattle Seahawk Booster Club organizer and longtime member . Sam is survived by his loving wife Dee, three sons Greg (Carol), Mark (Tricia) and Bryan (Sheila), grandsons Matthew, Patrick, Daniel, Sam, Adam, Benjamin and Sean McNaghten, granddaughters Meghan Archer, Shannon Clark, and Katherine McNaghten and 16 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Betty of Las Vegas, NV. Sam is preceded in death by brothers Frank, Tom and sister Theresa and his first born son Francis. Rosary service will be held Sunday, October 16 at 4 PM at Hennessey's Funeral Home at 2203 No. Division St. in Spokane. Funeral Mass will be Monday, October 17th at 11 AM at St. Joseph's Catholic Church at 3720 E. Colbert Road, Colbert, WA. 99005.
